This is historical fiction, and while we rarely select fictional works this is so well done we wanted to present it here. Also it has the advantage of being in AUDIO FORMAT so you can listen while you drive or relax. This fifth volume in the Queens of England Series is devoted to Eleanor of Aquitaine, who divorced the King of France and married the King of England. Mother of Richard the Lionhearted and King John (of Magna Carta fame), she presided over "The Court of Love" and rode bare-breasted on the Crusades.
A Reader's Guide to the Roman de la Rose:
This work provides an excellent introduction to the scholarly study of the Roman de la Rose. It will be particularly useful to these interested in the Roman de la Rose as an influence on many subsequent works in various languages. . . . Although there is much critical material in Luria's work, its major purpose is that of a guide. . . . A new copy is not available at this time. There is only ONE copy of this title still available.
.....is the culminating work of the medieval courtly tradition. The first half is an idealistic account of a lover's adventures, the second a cynical satire against love and the church....A rich tale about the Lover and his quest (against the admonishments of Reason and the obstacles set by Jealousy and Resistance) to pluck the fair Rose in the Enchanted Garden. Includes sixty-four miniature illustrations from thirteenth- and fifteenth-century manuscripts, and the notes are keyed to the Langlois edition, on which the translation is based. Elegant and precise translation of the Old French text, with line-by-line rendering in contemporary English.
Double Flame: Love and Eroticism: Elegant, pensive and intimate...a brilliant synthesis of ideas. Noble Laureate Octavio Paz explores the intimate connection between sex, eroticism and love in this collection of essays. Beginning with Plato's Symposium, he gives a short history of love and eroticism in literature throughout the ages.
This collection offers new and challenging scholarly interpretations of six major "Chaucerian" love poems from Clanvowe's "Cuckoo and the Nightingale" (1385) to the early Renaissance "Court of Love" (c. 1530). This study reveals previously overlooked subtlety and irony of these works, including an original, in-depth look at the neglected icon of this erotic poetry, the hawthorn tree... contributes to the ongoing debate about the meaning of love in Middle English, and medieval, poetry.
