...how the books of the New Testament came into being, who produced them, what they mean, how they relate to contemporary Christian and non-Christian literature, and how they came to be collected into a canon of Scripture. Distinctive to this study is its emphasis on the historical, literary, and religious milieu of the Greco-Roman world, including early Judaism.
The Doctors of the Church: Thirty-Three Men and Women Who Shaped Christianity: In two thousand years of history only thirty-three individuals have been accorded the title of doctor ecclesiae.
Here is an astute and persuasive portrait of the Roman emperor who could preserve an empire but could not prevent the destruction of his own family, the greatest soldier-statesman in Roman history duped by his vengeful, scheming wife into executing his innocent son.
Women and the Word:
The inner teachings of early Christianity and the numerical symbolism of ancient solar divinities.
A lucid and invaluable study of the separation of Christianity from Judaism in the first century. Saints and Sinners: A History of the Popes: A wonderful study of heroism and flawed humanity...an enjoyable and sumptuous book.
The Gnostic Gospels: The historical and theological implications of an ancient library of Gnostic texts, found near Nag Hammadi in upper Egypt in 1945. These old texts were banned by the early Christian hierarchy, suppressed for 2000 years. Judge for yourself the reason why these texts were not made available by the Church.
Biography, literature, doctrines, practices, institutions, worship, missions, and daily life. Archaeology and art as well as writings are drawn on to illuminate the Christian movement in its early centuries. Ample attention is also given to the relation of Christianity to pagan thought and life, to the Roman state, to Judaism, and to doctrines and practices that came to be judged as heretical or schismatic. Introductions to each volume tie the articles together for an integrated understanding of the history. A new copy is not available from Barnes & Noble.com at this time but a used copy may be available from our network of book dealers.

A new copy is not available at this time. There are only TWO used copies of this title still available. Recently discovered and deciphered texts, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Nag Hammadi library, suggest that the boundaries between early Christian belief, Jewish tradition, and the ancient pagan Mysteries are not as well defined as has usually been believed. During the early centuries after Christ, Gnostic Christians tried to preserve the archaic Mysteries as a way to knowledge (gnosis) of higher cosmic truths. The Gnostic sects were finally suppressed by an authoritarian Church that would not tolerate deviation from the established Christian teachings.
The first chronicle of the Christian church, written in the early 4th century by the bishop of Palestine, and concentrating on the Eastern church and the defeat of heresy.... story of Christianity in its struggle against persecutors and heretics.
Antichrist:
A wonderful, beautifully written and challenging book, surely the best one-volume introduction to the subject. The Antichrist as an essential figure of Christian faith from the early Christian communities to the apocalyptic visions of contemporary fundamentalists. A richly detailed illustrated history of "Christ's alter ego".
Satan : The Early Christian Tradition: ...the book's sweep is grand. In December 1945, two Egyptian fellahin, digging in the Nile River valley, unearthed a sealed storage jar. The jar proved to hold treasure of an unexpected sort: a collection of some fifty-two ancient manuscripts...The texts are, with few exceptions, Christian documents, and thus they provide us with valuable new information about the character of the early church.-- the Secret Book of James, the Gospel of Thomas, the Book of Thong, and the Secret Book of John.
The Foundations of Mysticism: Origins to the Fifth Century: The first volume of the highly-praised landmark trilogy The Presence of God: A History of Western Christian Mysticism. "A book to be treasured."
Gospel according to Philip:
Was this gospel written much later than other gospels and is it authentic? This book argues that terms of self-designation, use of controversial vocabulary, style, hermeneutic strategies, and theological commitments together present persuasive evidence of derivation from multiple sectarian milieux.
The Ancient Mysteries: ...contains a very balanced selection of sources for the study of the ancient so-called mystery religions, starting with Eleusis and ending with mysteries in Judaism and Christianity. . . . No other modern sourcebook exists in this field. Therefore this book fills a gap not only in the area of late antiquity and early Christianity, but also in the field of history of religions in general. ...based on careful reading of the original texts in their original languages. It is a competent, intelligent, and sympathetic study of which the original conclusions deserve careful consideration.
